Since 1983 Silver Garden Jewelry has built up a network of gem dealers in countries around the world that allows us to bring you genuine gemstones at excellent prices. Unless stated to the contrary our gemstones are guaranteed to be genuine.
The epicenter of semi-precious gemstone activity, Jaipur India, plays a uniquely important role our sourcing of gemstones. Rough stones from the four corners of the earth are sent to this lovely city to be cut into gems for setting into local creations or exported to jewelry producing centers world-wide.
As one of Asia’s only planned cities, Jaipur was laid out by Maharaja Jai Singh in accordance with ancient Hindu Treaties on auspicious alignment. Completed in 1727, each area of the city was assigned a certain purpose; jewelers and gem dealers were offered plots lining the most prestigious market of all, Johari Bazaar. To this day, the grand avenue hosts many retail jewelry shops while the laneways behind are chockablock with wholesalers dealing in every gemstone produced.
The Maharaja had a personal love of extravagant ornaments and wisely decided to foster an indigenous industry. Skilled craftsmen were brought from Bengal to teach locals the art of fashioning glittering gemstones from rough material. Amethyst, Rainbow Moonstone and Lapis (to name a few gemstones) soon became a specialty and as such, Jaipur is still famed for these stones. As demand grew, cutters learned the tricks of the trade by cutting a wide variety of stones, turning their city into a world class center for the gem industry.
We have been working with trusted families in Jaipur since the early 1980’s, who cut stones for our jewelry produced in Kathmandu. Curiously enough, our work follows an ancient pattern of commerce between the two cities. The Royal Family of Nepal has always maintained close links through marriage with the Royal houses of old Rajputana, the many Rajput principalities that now form the Indian state of Rajasthan. Traders from Jaipur and Jodhpur established business houses centuries ago, providing a vital link between the source of gemstones and the Nepali aristocracy, whose love of elaborate ornamentation is legendary. The links continue to this day.
We are proud to carry on this tradition in such a time-honored ancient trade, which provides employment for many and a rich source of natural gemstones to our craftsmen in Kathmandu
